Param Vir Chakra in the highest level gallantry award usually given by the President of India for Bravery or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. This medal can be awarded to officers or personnel from all branches of the Indian military, whether it may be Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Ashok Chakra has the same value as the Param Vir Chakra has. This is also the highest peacetime military decoration awarded for courageous action or self-sacrifice in the battlefield. The ribbon may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel.

Mahavir Chakra is the second-highest military decoration in India just after the Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra. This award is given for outstanding gallantry in front of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air.

Vir Chakra is an Indian gallantry award presented for acts of bravery on the battlefield. Fellowship of the decoration carries with it the right to use Vr.C. as a postnominal abbreviation. It is third in precedence in the wartime gallantry awards and comes after the Param Veer Chakra and Maha Veer Chakra.

Kirti Chakra is one of the essential gallantry awards given away from the battlefield. Before 1967 the Kirti Chakra has been called the Ashok Chakra Class II. Thirty Kirti chakra has been awarded to the personnel of the Indian Air Force, including many NCOs and JCOs. Nine of the KCs were awarded posthumously.

Shaurya Chakra also is an Award given for gallantry in the face of the enemy. This award may be given after the death of the person. Officers and Men and Women personnel of the Army, Navy, and the Air Forces of the Territorial Army, Military, and any other lawfully constituted Armed Forces. Members of the Nursing Services of the Armed Forces are also eligible to receive the Shaurya Chakra.
